Many things that were never done online in the past are so commonplace now, you might assume you can complete all of your occupational or physical therapy CEU requirements online. For many states, you can. But you might be surprised to find that some states still limit how many CEUs you are allowed complete through online activities.
A few states, like New York, make it simple. On their website, it clearly states that you can complete all of your CEU requirements online.
Other states are a little more complicated. They may not have a specific in person requirement, but there may be limits on different types of online CEUs. For example, the North Carolina PT Board website states “there is no in person requirement.” But they do have the following limits: Live webinars - 15 points, Recorded webinars - 10 points, Home study furnished by an approved provider - 10 points.
And there are a number of states that simply limit the total number of online CEUs you can complete. For example, Florida limits the number of online CEUs to 12 for both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy professionals.
If you can only take 12 CEUs online, the rest must have to be completed in person then, right?
Not exactly. Most states with an online CEU limit consider courses that are completed through a webinar or other online format, with real time interaction between the participant and the presenter during the session as “live” courses. Since these are considered live they are generally not subject to the online limit.
So, even if your state has some type of online limit, you may still be able to complete all of your activities online.

The best place to find your state's limitations is, of course, the rules and regulations documents of the state board. You can generally find these documents on the state board website. The online limitations may be listed directly on the website under a Continuing Education or FAQ page, but sometimes you'll only find these limits listed in the official rules of the state.
