How To Earn Physical Therapy CEUs: Journal Club

When you think of physical therapy continuing education requirements, do you only think about taking courses? Most people do. However, there are many other activities that you can participate in that allow you to earn physical therapy CEUs. One way is by being in a journal club or study group.

Does Your State Allow Credit for Journal Clubs?

At least 14 states allow PTs and PTAs to earn continuing education units through some type of journal club or study group. Most require 2-4 participants, but a few accept individual reviews of journal articles or other reading material. Most states allow between 2 and 5 CEUs per renewal cycle to be earned through this type of activity.

To find out if your state allows you to earn PT CEUs this way (and if so, how many you can earn), start by visiting your state licensing board website. If you don't find the answer on a page about renewals or continuing education, you may have to read the rules and regulations documents. What Do You Have to Do to Earn CEUs This Way?

You may already be reading journal articles to stay up to date with current research. By participating in a journal club or study group and reviewing these articles with other professionals, you can earn a few CEUs for something that won’t cost you much, if any, money. If you don’t subscribe to any journals or have an APTA membership, you might be able to access journal articles through your employer, especially if you work for a hospital system.

To qualify for credit, you’ll be required to complete some type of proof of completion. Some states have a particular form to be filled out, others outline what is required in their rules and regulations. This may include names of other participants, time spent, goals and learning outcomes, or a review of the article.
