How To Earn Physical Therapy CEUs: Mentorship

Continuing Education

By Kim, April 27, 2024

When you think of physical therapy continuing education requirements, do you only think about taking courses? Most people do. However, there are many other activities that you can participate in that allow you to earn physical therapy CEUs. Many therapists informally act as mentors to others, but if you provide mentorship in a formal program, you may be able earn continuing education credit while helping a colleague.

What Does Acting as a Mentor Entail?

As with most things related to physical therapy continuing education, it depends on the state. For the majority of states that allow you to earn CEUs as a mentor, it must be for a clinical fellowship or residency program.

Other states, like South Carolina and Mississippi, allow you earn CEUs as long as there is a formal program in place with documentation of the objectives and action plans, as well as the activities completed.

How Many CEUs Can You Earn as a Mentor?

Each state that allows CEUs for acting as a mentor has a maximum number of CEUs you can earn this way. The number varies from state to state, and ranges from 2 to 15 credits depending on the state and type of mentorship. There is also a conversion rate that you need to apply to figure out how many CEUs you can earn.

The conversion rates and maximum CEUs allowed are very well spelled out in some states, more vague in others. The most accurate answers to questions about what qualifies for CEU credit and how many credits you can earn per activity can be found in the rules and regulations documents for each state. You can find these documents on the state board websites which we have linked on our Physical Therapy CEU requirements pages.
